Description (podcaster-provided):

I'm Jordan Myers and I'm a PhD student studying philosophy at USC. Plato's Cave is my attempt to exit... well, the cave. It's a philosophy podcast meant to help me guide my ascent to the real world, the truth, the place where life is worth living; and apparently that means giving up a regular job with good pay to pursue the security of the academic job market - the philosophy job market nonetheless! Join me on my journey as I cover philosophical works and speak with the best philosophical minds I can convince to come on the show!

Themes and summary (AI-generated based on podcaster-provided show and episode descriptions):

➤ academic philosophy readings/interviews • consciousness debates: materialism, epiphenomenalism, hard problem, Mary • anger, blame, forgiveness, outrage, empathy • moral responsibility, free will, determinism • political philosophy: Marx, liberty, equality, restorative justice

This podcast follows a graduate-student host working through major problems, arguments, and texts in philosophy, often in a seminar- or reading-group style. Across the episodes, the content centers on close engagement with influential papers and books, with the aim of clarifying what the authors claim, how their arguments work, and what objections or rival views might look like. Conversations frequently track the structure of a text, pausing to define key terms, isolate premises, test intuitions with thought experiments, and connect abstract positions to broader philosophical stakes.

A substantial portion of the podcast is devoted to philosophy of mind and consciousness, including debates over physicalism and materialism, nonreductive approaches, and classic challenges such as the knowledge argument and the “hard problem” of explaining subjective experience. These discussions treat consciousness as a focal point for disputes about explanation, identity, and the relationship between mental and physical descriptions.

Another recurring focus is moral psychology and moral philosophy, especially anger, blame, and forgiveness. The podcast explores different types of anger (including moral anger and outrage), questions about when anger is apt or valuable, and the potential virtues or alternatives associated with tempering anger. Related themes include the social and interpersonal dimensions of blame, including forms of epistemic blame and how relationships may change in response to perceived violations of epistemic norms.

The show also spends significant time on free will and moral responsibility, covering positions such as compatibilism, revisionism, and skepticism about responsibility. It examines landmark debates about alternative possibilities, reactive attitudes, determinism, and how these issues bear on practices of praise, resentment, punishment, and legal responsibility, sometimes incorporating perspectives from neuroscience and law.

In addition, the podcast includes political philosophy and ethics topics—equality, liberty, Marxist critiques of labor, rights traditions, and restorative justice—alongside explorations of existentialist literature and its philosophical themes. Some episodes feature interviews with contemporary philosophers, complementing the reading-group format with discussion of ongoing research programs.
